Editions and lessons visibility
FollowIn Learning, every user only sees the editions and lessons that concern them, based on the permissions set on the courses. The permissions defined on a course's padlock are automatically extended to its editions and lessons, so you don't have to configure the same permissions more than once.
How course permissions extend to editions and lessons
When you set the permissions on a course's padlock, they are automatically inherited by its editions and the related lessons. In practice, whoever can see the course also sees its editions and lessons, with no further setup.
Setting specific rules on a single edition
If a single edition requires permissions different from the course, set them directly on the edition's padlock. When both the course and the edition have permissions set, you see the edition if you have read permission in the course padlock or you are included in the edition padlock; if instead the course is open to everyone but the edition has its own permissions, only the edition's permissions apply.
When it applies
Inheritance and the visibility filter act when edition security is enabled. The default access for new editions is set in Company Preferences → Learning - Editions, through the Default user access setting option:
- Only specified users can access editions: new editions are created with restricted access and follow the permissions inherited from the course (or those set on the individual edition's padlock).
- All users access editions: new editions are open to everyone.
An edition open to everyone (both course and edition without restrictions) is visible to all only while it is open for enrollment, that is, in progress and with a start date not yet passed. Editions you are already enrolled in always remain visible.
What the employee sees
Editions
An edition's visibility depends on the permissions set on the course and on the edition:
| Course | Edition | Who sees the edition |
|---|---|---|
| Open to everyone | Open to everyone | Everyone, but only while it is open for enrollment (in progress and with a start date not yet passed) |
| Open to everyone | With its own permissions | Only those included in the edition's padlock |
| With permissions | Open to everyone | Those with read permission in the course padlock (through inheritance) |
| With permissions | With its own permissions | Those with read permission in the course padlock, or those included in the edition padlock |
In any case, the editions you are enrolled in are always visible.
Lessons
- You only see the lessons of the editions you can see.
- You don't see the lessons of the editions that aren't visible to you.
What the instructor sees
If you are the instructor of one or more editions, in addition to what you see as an employee you have visibility over the editions and lessons you manage.
Editions
- You see and can manage the editions for which you are the instructor.
- You still also see the editions you are entitled to as an employee (according to the rules described above) and those you are enrolled in.
Lessons
- External instructor: you only see the lessons of the editions for which you are the instructor, no longer all lessons.
- Internal instructor: you see the lessons of the editions for which you are the instructor and, in addition, the lessons of the editions you can see as an employee.
Required permissions
Editions and lessons visibility depends on the permissions set on the padlocks and assigned to your user account:
- Course padlock: to see a course and, through inheritance, its editions and lessons, you need the read permission in the course padlock. If read is turned off, the editions and lessons inherited from the course are not visible, unless the user is added directly to the edition padlock.
- Edition padlock: being included in the edition padlock is enough to see it, regardless of the read checkbox.
- The edit and delete permissions set in the padlocks determine whether you can also modify or delete editions and lessons, in addition to viewing them.
- You also need access permissions to the Editions and Lessons sections to view the respective menus.
