Chart view: 9-Box
FollowThe 9-Box is a chart type that arranges items in a 3×3 matrix, crossing two numeric values on a 0–3 scale. It is designed for talent evaluation (see The 9-Box grid: Performance and Potential), but it is available as a view type for any entity and any pair of numeric fields. The feature is available on request: if you don't see the chart type in the view designer, contact your Altamira representative.
Configuring a 9-Box view
- Create a new report view and set it up as a chart (see Chart view)
- In the Chart options, select the NineBox type
- Place the numeric field to display horizontally on the X axis and the one to display vertically on the Y axis: both must contain values from 0 to 3
- Add to the view the other fields you want to show in the item detail card; if the view contains an image field (for example the employee photo), it is used to represent the item in the grid, and the first text field is used as the name
The axis labels reflect the names of the configured fields. The view can then be used in the Report section or as a subview inside a record form.
How the grid is drawn
Each axis is divided into three fixed bands — Low, Medium, High — based on the numeric value:
| Value | Band |
|---|---|
| Above 0, up to 1 | Low |
| Above 1, up to 2 | Medium |
| Above 2, up to 3 | High |
Each item appears as a circular image (or a placeholder, if no image is available) in the cell matching its two values.
Unrated items
Items with one of the two values empty or equal to 0 do not appear in the grid: they are collected in the Unrated area, which you can click to browse the full list.
Interactions
- When a cell contains more items than can be displayed, the last slot shows a +N badge with the number of remaining items
- Click the +N badge (or the Unrated area) to open a side panel with the full list, complete with a search field and pagination
- Click an item in the panel to see its detail card with the image and the fields configured in the view
- Click Edit in the detail card to open the corresponding record
Very large populations
If the items to display exceed the limit supported by the chart, a warning icon appears next to the grid: the displayed results have been reduced because there are too many items. Set filters on the view to narrow down the population.
Permissions
- To configure a 9-Box view you need access to the Views & Forms designer, assigned to your user account
- To view the grid you need the Read permission on the entity the view is configured on; the Edit button respects the Write permissions on the record
